How Does TMS Work?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) utilizes brief magnetic pulses to activate nerve cells in targeted brain regions associated with mood and emotions.

This non-invasive therapy, cleared by the FDA for treating depression in cases where other methods have failed, has been a source of relief for numerous individuals, enabling them to regain control of their lives.

With its focus on precise brain stimulation, TMS stands out as a medication-free approach, offering hope to those seeking alternatives in the face of treatment-resistant depression.

Is TMS Safe?

Yes, TMS has been studied for over 30 years and has full FDA approval to treat symptoms of depression. You can read more about safety and TMS here.

What are Treatments Like?

You get to relax in a comfortable reclining chair. Treatments are short, generally under 20 mintues and you can drive yourself home after the procedure and resume normal activities. During treatments, you will feel a light, tapping sensation on the front and left side of your head.

If it’s your first session, your technician will measure your head to determine where to place the magnetic coil. They’ll also take other measurements to personalize the settings on the TMS machine.

You’ll hear a clicking sound as the magnetic impulses are released. You’ll also feel a tapping sensation beneath the magnetic coil.

What Do Patients Say?

" I noticed my depression started to lift, probably around treatment number five."

Mariah, TMS Patient

"Two weeks into treatment is when other people have said that they noticed
changes within me they had said my eyes looked a little brighter and that my smile wasn't so faked and rehearsed."

Allison, TMS Patient

"The depression was like I had clouds in my mind and it was just kind of like the clouds were separating and opening up when I started feeling better with the treatment, and I felt a lot better, cleaner feeling inside."

Richard, TMS Patient

TMS Explained

On the surface, a depressed brain looks much like a healthy brain but inside the differences are unmistakable.

During depression, the brain isn't operating at full strength in the area responsible for emotion. Think of it as the brain's emotional control center. The emotional control center delivers signals along the neural pathways to and from the areas of the brain that determine how we act react and respond to situations, thoughts, and feelings. In other words, signals that would normally regulate mood and emotions do not work properly in depression.

TMS works by directly targeting these parts of the brain that are affected by Depression.
